I have recently been thinking and thought about some of the lack we have in the Christian church with our evangelism. Many of us may go weeks or months without reading their Bible or attending a church that actually preaches through passages. What do you think? I find myself time and time again failing in this, granted that I do have lots of the passages in my memory and can find them easily and regurgitate them, that's no excuse for not reading more or listening to sermons more. Someone might say that reading is very important but also keep in mind that it's not necessarily true. God tells us to go and preach to the nations for how can they understand if they don't hear the word. This is why I fear the path of American churches now, we've kind of sized down our learning of God's word to a 30 minute sermon on Sunday.
Here's what I know, up until about 100 or 200 years, churches met every day of the week. Why is this what I think is important? Because we spend a lot of time away from God's word, they use to do scripture readings at night after work and went home and communed with their families. I think if we bring scripture readings back and also bring reading the word back into our homes, we will see people captivated by the Word of God. I can tell you that the longer we go without having the gospel told to ourselves, the more corrupt we will become.
Now what does this have to do with being Challenged at Church? Some people contribute their whole learning from the pastor, this in turn means that when they preach duds or seem to be wandering away from the doctrine we should hold, we just mumble and complain. This leads to church divisions and sometimes a heavy burden on the pastor. The sermon is indeed important, I do not say neglect going to church, but you need to have the discipline yourself to read God's word and to find ways to learn more. Someone may say "my pastor doesn't feed me" but the hidden issue is often "I need the pastor to feed me because I'm starving myself".
I have fallen victim to my own selfish ambitions as well, I by no means think I hear God's word enough, nor do I find that I see enough of God's Fruits in me. I fall, you fall, we all are fallen, we need to rely on God and focus ourselves in getting into a disciplined lifestyle that gives us food so we can grow and don't starve through the week. If we let God's word speak, his word will circumcise our hearts and bring us closer to him. This is our end goal, to be closer to God, is it not? We must start this by the preaching of the word daily to our hearts either by reading the word or by hearing the word. I think this is the Challenge a Church should be giving, for you to know the whole counsel of God's Word. If your pastor isn't challenging you, let me challenge you with this.
If you read this post and find yourself struggling about getting into God's word and need help, let me know, I will do my best to help you out, in turn, I will need your help as well.
Also if you read this post and want to get daily scripture readings back into churches, tell me how it goes with trying to bring that up to your elders, I would love to hear if people have gotten that started back up in their churches.
